Antigone Rising: From College Friends to Rock Pioneers and Youth Advocates

Antigone Rising transformed from college friends at Bucknell University into groundbreaking rock musicians who made history with Starbucks' first Hear Music promotion. Beyond their musical success, the New York-based band now champions LGBTQ youth and girls through their nonprofit Girls Rising organization.

What began as a friendship between college students at Bucknell University evolved into one of the most inspiring stories in contemporary rock music. Antigone Rising, formed in Greenwich Village by sisters Cathy and Kristen Henderson along with Penelope Peppy Kokines and Suzanne Obolsky, has spent over two decades proving that persistence and authenticity can break through industry barriers.

The band's early years were marked by relentless touring and grassroots financing, with fans literally funding their first four albums through donations. This dedication paid off when they caught the attention of Jason Flom at Lava Records in 2003, leading to their major label breakthrough. However, their most significant moment came in 2005 when Antigone Rising became the inaugural artists in Starbucks' Hear Music Series, a distinction that changed everything.

The acoustic album From the Ground Up found its way into coffee shops across America, selling over 450,000 copies by year's end. The single Don't Look Back resonated particularly well with country audiences, earning heavy rotation on CMT and showcasing the band's versatility across rock and alternative country genres. This crossover appeal demonstrated their ability to connect with diverse audiences through honest songwriting and powerful performances.

Throughout their journey, Antigone Rising has shared stages with legendary acts including the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Joan Jett, and the Allman Brothers. Their performance at Lilith Fair in 1998 and SXSW in 2005 cemented their reputation as a formidable live act capable of holding their own alongside established stars.

The band weathered significant changes when original lead singer Cassidy departed in 2008, followed by controversy over the unauthorized release of Tales From Wonderland under a different name. Rather than let these challenges derail their mission, Antigone Rising regrouped with Nini Camps joining as lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist in 2009, bringing fresh energy to their sound.

Recent years have seen the band expand their impact beyond music. In 2014, they established Girls Rising, a nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring girls and LGBTQ youth to pursue nontraditional careers. Their annual music festival has featured renowned artists like Shawn Colvin, Lisa Loeb, and Paula Cole, while icons Melissa Etheridge and Joan Jett have created grants supporting the cause.

With albums like 23 Red and the Whiskey & Wine EP series, Antigone Rising continues creating music that reflects their evolution as artists and advocates. Their collaboration with Nashville songwriter Lori McKenna on That Was The Whiskey demonstrates their ongoing commitment to crafting meaningful songs that resonate with listeners seeking authenticity in an increasingly manufactured music landscape.
