In the heart of Belgrade's bustling music scene, a distinctive sound emerged in 2005 that would capture the attention of Serbian pop music fans. Betty Boop, a power pop girl band, burst onto the scene with a fresh energy that perfectly embodied the spirit of mid-2000s European pop rock.
The band's formation brought together four talented young musicians: Marija Mandic on vocals and guitar, Anja Prošić behind the drums, Nina Doroškov on bass guitar, and Kristina Krspogačin providing additional vocals and guitar work. Under the creative guidance of songwriter and manager Ognjen Cvekić, Betty Boop quickly developed their signature power pop sound that would define their musical identity.
From their earliest days, Betty Boop demonstrated an ambitious drive to compete at the highest levels of Serbian music. Their debut single Tajna marked the beginning of a journey that would see them become regular contestants at prestigious festivals across the region. Their 2007 entry Sama earned them a respectable fifth-place finish, but it was the following year that truly established their credentials. With their powerful single Kvar, Betty Boop climbed to fourth place at Beovizija 2008, demonstrating their growth as both performers and songwriters.
Perhaps their most significant triumph came at the Sunčane Skale festival in Herceg Novi, where Betty Boop claimed the coveted New Star award in 2008. This victory was particularly sweet considering they had finished as runners-up at the same festival just two years earlier, showing their persistent dedication to improvement and artistic development.
The band's evolution continued in 2008 when Kristina Krspogačin departed, making way for Teodora Baković from Belgrade to join the group. This lineup change marked a new chapter for Betty Boop, as they continued to refine their sound and expand their repertoire with singles like Dobar dan and Niko kao ti.
