Broken by the Scream: Japan's Metal Idol Revolution Taking the World by Storm
When Broken by the Scream was announced in October 2016, few could have predicted just how far this Tokyo-born experiment in combining idol culture with extreme metal would travel. Debuting in January 2017, the group carved out a distinctive identity by fusing J-metal, metalcore, deathcore, djent, and progressive metal into a sound that was simultaneously abrasive and accessible, challenging listeners to reconsider the boundaries between pop performance and heavy music.
Their early output wasted little time in establishing their ambitions. Two EPs released in 2017 laid the groundwork for their full-length debut, An Alien's Portrait, which arrived in 2018 and signalled that Broken by the Scream had both the songwriting depth and the artistic vision to sustain a long-term career. Noisy Night Fever followed in 2019, consolidating their reputation at home, while a contribution to the video game Onee Chanbara Origin provided the band with their first meaningful taste of international recognition, introducing their sound to audiences well beyond Japan's borders.
The release of their third album, Rise Into Chaos, marked a genuine turning point. Initially published in Japan through Tokuma, the record received an international release in November 2022 via JPU Records, placing Broken by the Scream firmly on the radar of the global metal community. Reviews praised the album's fearless genre-blending, and the band began attracting attention from festival organisers and promoters across Europe and North America.
Behind the scenes, the group's trajectory shifted significantly in early 2023 when they connected with Christian Nakanishi, singer of Swedish Eurodance act Rednex and a seasoned producer of Japanese music projects. His influence proved transformative, opening doors to international touring opportunities, major festival appearances, and ultimately a contract with the legendary Metal Blade Records, announced on February 5, 2026. Few milestones in a metal band's career carry more symbolic weight than signing to Metal Blade, and for Broken by the Scream, it represented the culmination of nearly a decade of relentless artistic development.
The years between 2023 and 2025 were not without their personal challenges, however. In August 2023, it was announced that founding members Yabusame Ayame and Uriin Kagura would be departing, the former by her own choice and the latter due to health issues. The subsequent audition process brought in Mikogami Shizuku and Takayashiki Yayoi, refreshing the group's lineup while preserving the creative chemistry that had always defined them. The 2024 EP ReMake Them Joy introduced this new era to audiences and demonstrated that Broken by the Scream remained as vital and inventive as ever.
Their live ambitions have grown just as dramatically as their recorded output. January 2024 saw the group perform in the United States for the first time as part of the Anime Los Angeles convention, a moment that felt genuinely historic for fans who had followed them from the beginning. That same summer, they toured Europe, performing in Germany and at the celebrated Motocultor Festival in France. Their return to European stages in 2025 brought further headline moments, including appearances at Resurrection Fest in Spain and Japan Expo in France, with a coveted slot at the iconic Wacken Open Air booked for 2026.
Musically, Broken by the Scream continues to push forward without compromise. Their fourth studio album, Solar Strain, arrived in August 2025 and was heralded by the extraordinary single Tsuioku no Nasuka, an epic fourteen-minute journey that demonstrated just how far the band's compositional ambitions had grown since those first recordings back in 2017. It is a statement of intent from a group that has never been content to stand still, and it suggests that the most exciting chapters of their story are still very much being written.
