Crucified Barbara: The Story of Sweden's Hardest Rocking All-Female Band

From punk rock beginnings in Stockholm to headlining major European metal festivals, Crucified Barbara carved out a fierce legacy in hard rock and heavy metal. This is the story of four relentless women who broke boundaries, charted hits, toured with legends, and ultimately proved that rock and roll has no gender.

When Crucified Barbara first formed in Stockholm, Sweden in 1998, few could have predicted the impact this all-female quartet would have on the European hard rock and heavy metal scene. Beginning their journey as a punk rock outfit, the band quickly evolved their sound into something heavier and more visceral, embracing hard rock and heavy metal as their true musical identity. That transformation would prove to be the defining decision of their career.

The early years were spent honing their craft and building a devoted following, and by 2003 their persistence paid off when they signed with GMR Music Group of Stockholm. Heading to Pama Studios in Kristianopel during the spring of 2004, the band recorded what would become their debut album under the guidance of producer-engineer Mankan Sedenberg. The advance single Losing the Game arrived on 8 December 2005 and immediately announced Crucified Barbara to the world, rocketing straight to number eight on the Swedish music charts. Their debut album, In Distortion We Trust, followed in January 2006, earning international distribution across the UK, the US, France, Germany, and Benelux.

That same year, the band demonstrated their deep reverence for classic rock royalty by contributing two tracks, Killed by Death and Please Don't Touch, to St. Valentine's Day Massacre, a tribute album dedicated to the legendary Motörhead. Their admiration for Motörhead translated into real-world opportunity as well, with Crucified Barbara supporting the iconic band on tour in November 2006, alongside Clutch. They also made their mark at the prestigious Sweden Rock Festival in 2006, sharing stages with some of the biggest names in heavy music.

Their second album, Til Death Do Us Party, arrived in February 2009, produced in part by Mats Levén, a veteran collaborator of artists such as Yngwie Malmsteen and Therion. Levén even contributed vocals to the track Jennyfer, adding an unexpected dimension to the record. To promote the album, Crucified Barbara embarked on an ambitious six-week European tour spanning Germany, Belgium, France, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and Sweden. Filmmaker Mats Lundberg documented the entire journey, releasing the resulting documentary in 2010 and capturing the raw energy of the band on the road.

The year 2010 brought further visibility when Crucified Barbara competed in Melodifestivalen, Sweden's beloved song competition, with the track Heaven or Hell. The song reached number 31 on the Swedish charts, introducing the band to an even broader audience. That same year they performed at the legendary Wacken Open Air festival in Germany, cementing their credentials on the global metal stage. More festival appearances followed, including Graspop Metal Meeting in 2013 and a prestigious North American tour alongside Girlschool in 2015.

Throughout their career, Crucified Barbara released four studio albums in total, with The Midnight Chase in 2012 and In the Red in 2014 rounding out their discography and showcasing a band that continued to grow without ever abandoning the raw, unapologetic energy that defined them. Sadly, in June 2016, the band announced their breakup, citing a loss of the joy that had once driven them together. Members pursued solo projects and new bands, most notably The Heard, launched by three of the members in 2017.

However, the story of Crucified Barbara was far from over. In October 2024, the band announced a full reunion, with their first performance back scheduled for the iconic Sweden Rock Festival in 2025. For fans of uncompromising, hard-hitting rock music with soul and swagger, the return of Crucified Barbara is nothing short of a celebration of everything that makes heavy music enduring and essential.
