eX-Girl: Japan's Avant-Garde Noise Rock Band From Planet Kero Kero

Born in Tokyo in 1997, eX-Girl is a Japanese noise rock band unlike any other. Blending chaotic sonic experimentation with theatrical live performances, surreal costumes, and frog-themed mythology, they carved out a singular identity that earned them global recognition and the admiration of legends like Mike Patton and Jello Biafra.

eX-Girl is not a band that arrives quietly. Formed in Tokyo in 1997 by original members Chihiro, Kirilo, and Fuzuki, this Japanese noise rock trio burst onto the scene with an audacity that belied their complete lack of formal musical training. Under the guiding hand of celebrated producer and keyboardist Hoppy Kamiyama, the band channeled their inexperience into something genuinely unpredictable, releasing their debut album within just one year of forming and embarking on tours that would take them far beyond Japan's borders.

To simply call eX-Girl a noise rock band would be to dramatically undersell what they do. Their sound is a dizzying collision of art punk, space rock, neo-psychedelia, jazz fusion, and synth-pop, often crammed into a single song without apology. Their three-part vocal harmonies shift between jagged, borderline operatic passages and lush a cappella arrangements, creating an experience that is disorienting and deeply captivating all at once. The band famously claims to hail from the planet Kero Kero, and listening to their music, that assertion feels entirely plausible.

Their live performances are events unto themselves. eX-Girl takes the stage in elaborate homemade costumes, performing synchronized robot dancing and incorporating an assortment of frog-related props and imagery into their shows. It is this combination of sonic ambition and theatrical spectacle that caught the attention of Mike Patton of Faith No More, who described the band as "a beautiful example of information overload," praising their adventurous arrangements, their vocal harmonies, and their "ultra-bright technicolor live show." Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys became another vocal enthusiast, helping to amplify the band's reputation across the international underground music community.

By 1999, eX-Girl had performed at the prestigious Japan Nite event at SXSW in Austin, Texas, gaining the attention of major retailers like Virgin Megastore and Tower Records, who helped market their sophomore effort, Kero! Kero! Kero!. The following year brought the release of the fully a cappella album Big When Far, Small When Close, released through Kirilo's own label Kiki Poo Records, showcasing the trio's remarkable vocal range and willingness to strip their sound down to its most essential elements. Their European debut followed, bringing them to audiences hungry for something genuinely strange and thrilling.

In the summer of 2000, eX-Girl toured alongside Fantômas, the avant-garde supergroup led by Mike Patton, cementing a relationship between the two acts that would prove mutually beneficial. By 2001, they were performing at Denmark's legendary Roskilde Festival, and the year brought their first lineup change when Chihiro departed, replaced by Keiko of Super Junky Monkey, whose more aggressive guitar work added new muscle to the band's already formidable sound. In 2002, eX-Girl supported Siouxsie and the Banshees on tours across both the United States and the United Kingdom, introducing them to legions of new listeners.

The mid-2000s were defined by shifting lineups and continued creative ambition. Drummer Fuzuki departed in 2003, and the band released Endangered Species through Alternative Tentacles, the label founded by Jello Biafra, marking a significant moment in their international career. Kirilo rechristened herself Kirilola, and the band pressed forward through further personnel changes without ever losing their sense of identity or momentum. A world tour launched in October 2006, and by the summer of 2007, they undertook a final sweep through Northern Europe before announcing an indefinite hiatus, going dormant after a decade of relentless artistic output.

The silence lasted eleven years. In 2018, Kirilola — the band's sole surviving original member — announced the reformation of eX-Girl after learning that a U.S. label, Secret Records, wished to repress Kero! Kero! Kero! on vinyl. Inspired and energized, she recruited two new members and staged a reunion show at Kichijoji GB in Tokyo in October of that year. By March 2019, eX-Girl had returned to SXSW, closing a remarkable circle that had begun in Austin twenty years earlier. Their story is one of relentless originality, and from the planet Kero Kero, they show no signs of returning home anytime soon.
