Ex Hex: The Washington D.C. Rock Band Redefining Indie Garage Rock
When Ex Hex emerged from Washington D.C. in 2013, the rock world took notice almost immediately. Formed by the accomplished guitarist and vocalist Mary Timony, alongside Betsy Wright and Laura Harris, the band quickly established itself as a powerhouse of indie rock, garage punk, and classic rock and roll energy. Their chemistry was undeniable from the very start, born out of a shared passion for raw, unfiltered guitar-driven music.
The band's story began humbly but promisingly, with Timony recording their first single, Hot and Cold, right in her own basement. That DIY spirit would go on to define much of Ex Hex's artistic identity. The recording captured an electrifying energy that signaled something fresh and exciting was on the horizon. Building on that momentum, the band teamed up with producers Mitch Easter and Jonah Takagi to craft their debut album, Rips, which landed on Merge Records on October 7, 2014.
Rips was a revelation — a tight, ferocious collection of songs that drew comparisons to the golden era of guitar rock while feeling entirely contemporary. Critics praised its relentless energy and the seamless interplay between the three musicians. The album demonstrated that Ex Hex was not simply reviving the past but injecting it with new life and a distinctly modern perspective.
Following the release, Ex Hex threw themselves into touring with remarkable dedication, sharing stages with celebrated acts such as Speedy Ortiz, King Tuff, Rocket from the Crypt, and The Jacuzzi Boys. These tours helped the band build a fiercely loyal fanbase and cemented their reputation as an electrifying live act. The culmination of this growing recognition came in the summer of 2016, when Ex Hex performed at the prestigious Coachella Festival, introducing their music to an even wider global audience.
After a period of anticipation, Ex Hex announced their second album on January 9, 2019. Released on March 22, 2019, through Merge Records, It's Real showcased the band's continued evolution without abandoning the raw spirit that made them beloved in the first place. Lead single Cosmic Cave teased fans with an expanded sonic palette, proving that Ex Hex had no intention of standing still creatively.
Throughout their journey, Ex Hex has stood as a testament to the enduring power of guitar-driven rock and roll. With Mary Timony's decades of experience — spanning earlier projects such as Helium and Wild Flag — the band carries a rich musical legacy while always pushing forward. Their story is one of artistic integrity, relentless energy, and a deep, unwavering love for the power of rock music.
