Exist Trace: The All-Female Japanese Visual Kei Band That Conquered the World
When Exist Trace first emerged from Tokyo's vibrant underground music scene in June 2003, few could have predicted the remarkable journey that lay ahead. Founded by Jyou, Naoto, and Mally, the band completed its lineup after placing an advertisement for guitarists, eventually welcoming Miko and Omi into the fold. What resulted was one of the most distinctive and enduring acts in Japanese visual kei history — an entirely female band with a sound as fierce as it was captivating.
In their earliest days, Exist Trace carved out a reputation for raw, uncompromising melodic death metal. Vocalist Jyou's powerful growls and shouts gave the band a dark, aggressive edge that immediately set them apart. Their early demo tapes, Hai no Yuki and Kokumu, released in 2004, hinted at a band with serious ambition, and their debut EP Annunciation -The Heretic Elegy- in 2006 confirmed it. Over time, their sound evolved dramatically, weaving together heavy distortion, technically virtuoso guitar work, and gothic lyrical themes into something genuinely unique.
The band's creative process was as disciplined as it was collaborative. For their 2009 EP Vanguard -Of the Muses-, lead songwriter and guitarist Miko described a method where each member would independently write both music and lyrics before coming together to record, completing entire sessions within tight two-week windows. This approach produced some of the band's most powerful early work and reflected a commitment to craft that would only deepen in the years ahead.
By the time Exist Trace released their debut full-length album Recreation Eve in 2008, they had already begun making waves beyond Japan's borders, embarking on a tour of Europe that included performances in the United Kingdom. Their international profile continued to grow when they made their U.S. debut at Sakura-Con 2011 in Seattle, Washington, followed by appearances at Tekkoshocon X in Pittsburgh in 2012 and A-Kon in 2013. These shows introduced the band to a wave of devoted new fans who had largely discovered them through word of mouth.
A significant milestone came on June 15, 2011, when Exist Trace made their major label debut on Tokuma Japan Communications with the EP True. Their momentum continued with the release of Virgin in May 2012, their highest-charting record, which reached number 84 on the prestigious Oricon album chart. That same year, their self-released concert DVD Just Like a Virgin captured the band's electrifying live energy, and their song I Feel You was featured in the official guidebook DVD for Nadeshiko Japan, the country's celebrated women's national football team.
In 2013, Exist Trace embarked on a bold new artistic direction. Miko, long the band's primary lyricist and composer, officially stepped into a dual-vocal role alongside Jyou, a dynamic showcased prominently on the single Diamond. The twin vocal approach reached full expression on the 2014 album World Maker, which balanced Jyou's heavier delivery with Miko's sweeter counterpoint, revealing a richer, more layered sound. The experimental spirit also surfaced in unexpected ways, from the jazz-inflected Ginger to the electronic pulse of Diamond and the infectious 1980s disco energy of Spiral Daisakusen.
The band's connection to their international fanbase was further strengthened in 2014 with the launch of Archangel Diamond, an official global fan club designed to bring fans closer to the band through exclusive merchandise, monthly newsletters, and special interactions. It was a testament to how deeply Exist Trace valued their worldwide community, acknowledging that their reach had grown far beyond the stages of Tokyo.
The band continued releasing music into the 2020s, with the EP The Only Garden arriving in July 2020 and a compilation album, Neo Japanese Heroine, following in 2022. In July 2023, Exist Trace embarked on a two-date Asian tour alongside Ancient Myth and Fate Gear, performing in Hong Kong and Taipei under the evocative banner Midsummer's Night Wish. With an upcoming album, Who I Am, scheduled for release in November 2025, Exist Trace shows no signs of slowing down, continuing to push boundaries and inspire fans around the world with their powerful, ever-evolving music.
