Indica

Indica was born in Helsinki, Finland, in 2001, when five musically gifted young women came together with a shared passion rooted deeply in classical music. Founding members Johanna "Jonsu" Salomaa on vocals and violin, Heini Säisä on bass, Sirkku Karvonen on keyboards, Jenny Julia Mandelin on guitar, and Laura Häkkänen on drums had each spent their childhoods immersed in classical training, lending their music a richness and sophistication that would become their signature.

The band's early momentum was swift and decisive. During Christmas 2002, Indica signed a management contract, and by 2003, the attention of Jani Jalonen of Sony Music had translated into a full recording deal. Their debut album, Ikuinen virta, released in August 2004, was a watershed moment. Co-produced by Gabi Hakanen and Erno Laitinen, the record eventually achieved platinum status in Finland, with both the title track and the single Scarlett resonating strongly with Finnish audiences. It was a remarkable debut that announced Indica as a serious force in Finnish pop rock.

The band continued to build their catalog steadily and confidently. Their second album, Tuuliset tienoot, released in autumn 2005, sold over 20,000 copies, while their third, Kadonnut puutarha, arrived in the spring of 2007. Throughout this period, Indica's creative heart beat through the songwriting of Jonsu, who had been composing music since before her school years. Drawing inspiration from film scores, personal experience, and the dreams and lives of those around her, Jonsu crafted a lyrical world that was both intimate and cinematic.

A pivotal chapter in Indica's story began when they joined Nightwish as a support act during the 2007 Scandinavian tour, performing English-language versions of their songs to enthusiastic crowds across the Nordic countries. This tour forged a meaningful creative partnership with Nightwish frontman and composer Tuomas Holopainen, who went on to produce their fourth album, Valoissa, released in autumn 2008. Enriched by orchestral arrangements from Pip Williams and lyrical contributions from poet and screenwriter Rory Winston, Valoissa represented a bold artistic leap, charting at number three in Finland.

Indica's international ambitions crystallized with the release of A Way Away in June 2010, their first fully English-language album, released through Nuclear Blast. The record reimagined several beloved Finnish compositions for a global audience, with cinematic music videos shot in Tokyo by French photographer Denis Goria. Songs like Straight and Arrow and In Passing introduced the band's lush, emotionally layered sound to listeners far beyond Finland's borders.

The band entered another creative phase in 2013 and 2014, releasing both the Finnish album Akvaario and its English counterpart Shine simultaneously in January 2014. However, the period also brought change, with guitarist Jenny Mandelin departing from the band in October 2014 after more than a decade as a founding member. Despite her absence, Indica continued to carry forward the musical identity they had spent years building.

After years of relative quiet, Indica signaled a return in March 2023 when they announced the end of their eight-year hiatus and released the new single Year 95. Spanning genres from pop rock and alternative rock to symphonic metal, and weaving together classical training, cinematic songwriting, and international collaboration, Indica's journey stands as a testament to artistic ambition, resilience, and the enduring power of music crafted with genuine passion.
