Junkyard Lipstick: The Trailblazing All-Female Metal Band That Rocked South Africa

Junkyard Lipstick carved their name into South African metal history as Cape Town's fiercest all-female heavy metal outfit. From 2011 to 2016, these five fierce musicians delivered bass-heavy crossover thrash with playful humor, breaking barriers and supporting international acts while releasing acclaimed albums and singles.

In the vibrant metal scene of Cape Town, South Africa, few bands have left as lasting an impression as Junkyard Lipstick. Formed in 2011, this groundbreaking all-female heavy metal quintet emerged with a mission to prove that fierce musicianship knows no gender boundaries. Their unique blend of heavy metal and crossover thrash, characterized by fast-paced rhythms and bass-heavy compositions, quickly distinguished them from their contemporaries.

What truly set Junkyard Lipstick apart was their distinctive lyrical approach, which masterfully combined gore-laden imagery with delicate feminine touches, all delivered with an unmistakable playful sense of humor. This odd but interesting amalgamation became their signature calling card, creating a sound that was both brutal and surprisingly accessible.

The band's rise to prominence was marked by an impressive series of festival appearances that showcased their growing influence. They graced the stages of Rock The River New Years Festivals in both 2011 and 2012, establishing themselves as a festival favorite. Their journey continued with memorable performances at Splashy Fen in Durban, Rolling Stone South Africa's Weekend event, and the prestigious RAMFest in 2014.

Perhaps their most significant achievement came in August 2015 when Junkyard Lipstick made history as the main support act for the Cape Town leg of international metal band Aborted's South African tour. This groundbreaking moment marked the first time an all-female act had supported an international metal band on a South African stage, cementing their status as trailblazers in the industry.

Damned in the Deep South

Their studio output proved equally impressive, beginning with their debut album Hellbent in March 2013, which established their reputation for delivering catchy, hard-hitting compositions. The band continued to evolve with releases like the EP The Butcher's Delight in 2014, and singles Damned in the Deep South and Trafficked & Tortured, each showcasing their musical growth and lyrical sophistication.

Throughout their five-year journey, Junkyard Lipstick experienced various lineup changes while maintaining their core identity. The band's final iteration featured Lucinda Villain on drums, Louise Gorman and Robyn Bruwer on guitars, Jo-mariè Smit on vocals, and Katinka Janse van Rensburg on bass. Their final studio statement came with Repulsive Judgement in September 2016, serving as both a culmination of their artistic journey and a farewell to their devoted fanbase.

When Junkyard Lipstick disbanded in 2016, they left behind a legacy that extended far beyond their recorded output. They had proven that South African metal could compete on an international stage while breaking down barriers for female musicians in a traditionally male-dominated genre. Their influence continues to inspire a new generation of metal musicians across South Africa and beyond.
