Lovebites: The Japanese All-Female Power Metal Band Taking the World by Storm
Lovebites began their journey in Tokyo in 2016, brought to life by bassist Miho and drummer Haruna, two veterans of the disbanded all-female metal group Destrose. After recruiting guitarist Midori and keyboardist-guitarist Miyako, the four musicians selected vocalist Asami based solely on a demo recording she submitted. The band's name was inspired by a rehearsal moment when the group performed Love Bites (So Do I) by Halestorm, a song that felt tailor-made for Asami's powerful voice. From that electrifying rehearsal connection, a band identity was born.
Their debut EP, The Lovebites EP, arrived in May 2017 via Victor Entertainment, mixed and mastered in Helsinki, Finland by engineers who had worked with Nightwish and Children of Bodom. The quality of the recording caught international attention immediately, leading to UK and North American releases. Later that year, their first full-length album, Awakening from Abyss, solidified their reputation, and the band wasted no time in taking their music abroad, performing in London before the year was out.
2018 proved to be a watershed year for Lovebites. Their second EP, Battle Against Damnation, was followed by a triumph at the prestigious Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards, where they claimed the Best New Band prize. They went on to perform at Wacken Open Air in Germany, becoming the first Japanese all-female metal band to grace that legendary festival's stage, and they delivered a commanding performance on the main stage at Bloodstock Open Air. Their second album, Clockwork Immortality, released in December 2018, earned glowing reviews and cemented their reputation as a force to be reckoned with in the global metal scene.
The band's ascent continued through 2019, with performances at Download Festival in both the UK and Spain and at Graspop Metal Meeting in Belgium. A particularly memorable moment came when vocalist Asami joined Halestorm on stage at Download Festival to sing Love Bites (So Do I), the very song that had inspired the band's name. Their third studio album, Electric Pentagram, followed in January 2020, showcasing a band continuing to refine and expand their sound despite the disruptions of the global pandemic that would soon reshape their touring plans.
A significant chapter closed in August 2021 when co-founder and bassist Miho announced her departure. The remaining members paused all activities out of respect for her decision, releasing a heartfelt best-of compilation, In the Beginning – The Best of 2017–2021, before embarking on an open audition for a new bassist. The process, which ran from April to October 2022, drew enormous interest, culminating in the announcement of twenty-year-old Fami as Miho's successor. A self-taught virtuoso with nearly 650,000 YouTube subscribers, Fami brought fresh energy to the band's revitalized lineup.
The new era began in earnest with the release of Judgement Day in February 2023, Lovebites' highest-charting record to date, reaching number five on both the Oricon and Billboard Japan charts. The album announced to the world that the band had not merely survived adversity but had emerged stronger for it. Their first full world tour, The Thin Line Between Love and Hate, spanning ten countries and sixteen cities in 2024, underscored just how far their reach had extended. Sold-out dates in Europe and America, alongside appearances at Hellfest and ProgPower USA, confirmed their status as a genuinely global metal act.
Musically, Lovebites draws deeply from the new wave of British heavy metal, with comparisons frequently drawn to Iron Maiden, while weaving in thrash metal intensity and the melodic grandeur of European power metal. Their all-white stage attire deliberately contrasts the genre's traditional aesthetic, while their English-language lyrics, translated from Japanese originals, give their music a universal resonance. A wolf mascot graces each album cover, symbolizing the band's position as outliers in the mainstream music landscape, lone wolves howling their own truth to the world.
With their fifth studio album, Outstanding Power, released in February 2026, and a sold-out debut concert at the iconic Nippon Budokan in March of that year, Lovebites have proven that their story is far from over. What began as five musicians united by a love of heavy metal has grown into one of the most compelling and internationally resonant acts in contemporary metal, a band that has broken barriers and built a devoted global following entirely on the strength of their music.
