Taking their name from a taxi featured in Pedro Almodóvar's cult film Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Mambo Taxi embodied a spirit that was simultaneously chaotic and purposeful, colourful yet meaningful. Guitarist Ella Guru once described the name to NME as "tacky" but "with all sorts of different things in it that sort of clash, but everything's useful as well as fun" — a description that perfectly captured the band's essence.

Mambo Taxi were born out of a squat in Islington, London, in 1991, when Lenie Mets was invited to join Anjali Bhatia, Ella Guru, Andrea Stallard, and Delia Sparrow, who were all living together in the same building. The band brought together members from remarkably diverse backgrounds — Lenie hailed from Belgium, Karin Rapp from Germany, Ella from Ohio, and Delia, Andrea, and Anjali from Britain — giving their music an international flavour that set them apart from their contemporaries.

Inspired equally by the UK garage rock scene and the raw energy of American punk, Mambo Taxi quickly embedded themselves in one of London's most vibrant independent music ecosystems. They became closely associated with three pioneering indie labels — Clawfist, Too Pure, and Wiiija — and formed meaningful ties with fellow riot grrrl-aligned bands such as Huggy Bear. Their sound was a charged and unpredictable fusion of garage, punk, and pop that felt both urgent and accessible.

Their debut release was a double A-side single featuring Prom Queen, written by Anjali, and Insecure, written by Lenie, released on Clawfist in 1993. The original line-up featured Lenie on lead vocals and bass, Delia on guitar and vocals, and Andrea on organ and vocals. However, the band's membership began shifting early on when drummer Anjali Bhatia departed in 1992 to form the Voodoo Queens, with guitarist Ella Guru following her in 1993. Karin Rapp stepped in on drums and vocals from the second single onwards, bringing fresh energy to a band in transition.

Rather than faltering, Mambo Taxi channelled these changes into their most ambitious work. Their sole album, In Love With, released on Clawfist in 1994, stands as a testament to the band's willingness to tackle difficult and deeply personal subject matter. Across its thirteen tracks, the band explored sexual abuse in Velvet Youth, single motherhood in Push That Pram, depression and self-harm in Happy Claire, and organised religion in Evangelical. These were not comfortable topics for a pop record, and Mambo Taxi's unflinching approach to them made the album a quietly significant document of early 1990s feminist consciousness in British music.

The album also featured their most celebrated single, Poems on the Underground, which demonstrated that the band could marry sharp lyricism with genuinely infectious melody. Adding to their cultural legacy, the music videos for Mambo Taxi were early works by filmmaker Nicholas Abrahams, connecting the band to a broader world of British creative talent emerging at the time.

When Mambo Taxi dissolved in 1995, their members scattered across the British independent music landscape, leaving trails that would intersect with some of the era's most interesting acts. Lenie went on to form Jolt with former Senseless Things frontman Mark Keds, releasing music on their own label Scared of Girls before being signed by Warner Chappell. Her songwriting reach proved remarkably long — lyrics she co-wrote with Keds were later incorporated into Can't Stand Me Now by The Libertines, one of the defining British rock songs of the 2000s.

Delia Sparrow became one of the most active alumni, moving through a remarkable number of projects including Phantom Pregnancies, Baby Birkin, The A-Lines, The Schla La Las, and The Werewandas, among others. She and Karin Rapp briefly collaborated in Punjab Rovers, a short-lived but intriguing project alongside members of Cornershop. Delia and Andrea Stallard continue to perform together to this day in Ye Nuns, a covers band celebrating the music of The Monks.

In a music scene that has often overlooked its own history, Mambo Taxi remain a genuinely important chapter in the story of British independent music. Their willingness to merge political awareness with pure sonic exhilaration, and to address women's experiences with honesty and wit, places them firmly in a tradition that continues to resonate. For those yet to discover them, the journey starts with In Love With — and it is well worth taking.
