Vesna: The Czech Folk Band Celebrating Slavic Sisterhood and Eurovision Success
In the heart of Prague, a musical vision took shape in 2016 when Patricie Kaňok Fuxová set out to create something extraordinary—an all-female band that would celebrate femininity and Slavic sisterhood. This vision became Vesna, named after the Slavic goddess of spring, a fitting tribute to renewal and feminine power that would define their artistic journey.
The band's origins trace back to the Jaroslav Ježek Conservatory, where Fuxová met violinist Bára Juránková and flutists Andrea Šulcová and Tanita Yankova from Bulgaria. Despite being labeled as a Czech folk band, Fuxová has always maintained a broader artistic vision, stating that their music transcends traditional folklore, working instead with deeper archetypes and contemporary themes.
The year 2018 marked a pivotal transformation for Vesna as they welcomed Russian pianist Olesya Ochepovskaya and Czech drummer Markéta Vedralová, while bidding farewell to founding members Šulcová and Yankova. This same year witnessed the release of their debut album Pátá bohyně (The Fifth Goddess), a deeply personal work inspired by Fuxová's real-life experiences and Czech fairytales. The album's impact was immediate and profound, earning them the Discovery of the Year award at the prestigious Ceny Anděl 2018.
During the global pause of the COVID-19 pandemic, Vesna, now including Slovak bassist Tereza Čepková, channeled their creative energy into their second studio album Anima. This work explored animal motifs, the complex relationship between men and women, and celebrated the female form, demonstrating the band's evolution both musically and thematically.
The year 2023 became Vesna's breakthrough moment on the international stage. Their participation in ESCZ 2023, the Czech national selection for Eurovision, resulted in a commanding victory with 10,584 votes, securing their place as Czech representatives. Their Eurovision entry My Sister's Crown carried a powerful message about freedom from societal oppression, technology, and conformity—a symbolic crown for those seeking strength and liberation.
At Eurovision 2023, Vesna delivered a memorable performance that resonated across Europe. Competing in the first semi-final on May 9, they secured fourth place and qualification for the grand final, where they achieved a remarkable tenth-place finish with 129 points. This success marked the Czech Republic's best Eurovision result in years and established Vesna as international ambassadors of Slavic culture.
Following their Eurovision triumph, Vesna embarked on a European tour spanning Bulgaria, Hungary, Austria, Poland, and the Czech Republic, bringing their message of sisterhood to audiences across the continent. Their artistic journey continued with the release of Wolfrunners, the lead single from their album Muzika Slavica, which arrived in November 2023, further cementing their reputation as innovative artists who honor tradition while embracing contemporary expression.
Today, Vesna stands as more than just a musical group—they represent a cultural movement that celebrates the strength of women, the richness of Slavic heritage, and the power of music to unite people across borders. Their journey from Prague conservatory students to Eurovision stars illustrates how authentic artistic vision, combined with exceptional talent, can create music that resonates far beyond its origins.
